Carisoprodol, available in the market under the brand name soma, is used for relaxing muscles in your body and relieve you of the discomfort associated by short-term acute painful bone or muscle conditions. Though this drug is prescribed in combination with other treatments – exercise, rest, physical therapy or any other treatment recommended by the qualified medical practitioner. Soma pills are very effective in the treatment of muscle related injuries.
Soma is a prescription drug and should be taken in the exact manner as prescribed by the doctor. Do not make changes in the amount of medicine taken, or in the frequency or for a longer period of time. On taking it for a long duration, you may become habitual to it, leading to physical or psychological dependence. This drug should be ingested in the short-term treatment spanning two to three weeks.

What to do on missing a dose?

In case you forget to take a regular dose of this soma medication, you should take it as soon as you remember. Though you should skip that dose if the time has come to take the next dose. You should not ingest two doses at the same time as it may result on overdose of the drug.

Points to consider before taking soma:

Prior to starting the treatment with soma drug, you should discuss with the doctor and the following points should be taken into consideration:

1. You should inform the doctor if you are allergic to the drug or to any other substances such as dyes, animals, foods or preservatives.
2. Regarding the administration of this drug in children under the age of sixteen years, its safety and effectiveness is yet to be established. Hence, the medication should be taken under the strict supervision of the medical practitioner.
3. Similarly, in the case of elderly population, the medication should be taken when recommended by the doctor and in exact proportions.
4. You should discuss with the doctor at the onset of the treatment with soma pain medicine in case you suffer from other medical health problems that are mentioned below:

• Liver or kidney disease; in this case the effects of the medication may be enhanced due to gradual removal of the drug from your system.
• If you have a history of porphyria, you should not take soma.
• If you experience seizure, then usage of this drug can worsen it.
• You should also be extra careful while taking this drug if you have a history drug dependence or abuse. You may develop dependence on carisoprodol.

 

What precautions you should take?

• It is mandated that the healthcare professional monitors your response to treatment at regular intervals to ensure that this drug is acting properly and also to check for undesired effects.

• In some individuals, the intake of this medication may lead to the occurrence of drowsiness, dizziness or lack of concentration. In such a situation, you should refrain from undertaking any such hazardous activity or task that requires a high level of concentration such as operating heavy machines or driving a motor vehicle.

• The intake of this medication adds to the effects of other CNS depressants such as antihistamines or drugs for clods and allergies, tranquilizers or sleep medicines, hay fever, medicines for seizures or barbiturates, sedatives, prescription pain drugs or narcotics, anesthetics, and also alcohol.

• Hence, doctor’s discretion is advised if you are taking any of the above-mentioned medications.

• You should not abruptly discontinue the treatment with carisoprodol without consulting the doctor as it may lead to the occurrence of withdrawal reactions. It is advisable to gradually decrease the soma dosage before discontinuing it completely.

• You should get in touch with the doctor if your medical condition does not show signs of improvement in two to three weeks.

Storage and disposal:

You should store the medicine in a closed container at ambient room temperature, away from moisture, heat and direct light. It should not be frozen. Keep it in a place where it is beyond the reach of children. Avoid keeping medicine at home or in workplace that is either outdated or not required anymore.
